Dos Pueblos junior Nick Scarvelis uncorked a throw of 59-1 3/4 Friday to qualify for the shot put finals at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.
Scarvelis finished third in the prelims behind Willy Irvin of Clovis East, the state leader in the event, (62-6 3/4) and Matt Darr of Frontier High in the Central Valley (59-11). The top eight advanced to Saturday’s finals.
Scarvelis, whose best throw this season is 60-10 1/2, is one of two underclassmen in the final eight. The other is Stephen Boals of Sacramento-Jesuit. He’s the sixth qualifier.
Scarvelis failed to advance in the discus. He finished 20th with a mark of 159-4
