Dustin Demeter scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning to help Dos Pueblos slip past Montalvo 6-3 in an opening pool-play game at the District 63 Little League 11-12 Division All-Star Tournament at Ventura Coastal on Monday.
Demeter singled, advanced to third base and eventually scored on a wild pitch to break a 3-3 tie.
Dos Pueblos added two runs in the sixth on consecutive sacrifice flies by Peter Trapp and Tim Heiduk.
Demeter earned the victory on the mound. He pitched 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Luke Coffey, who struck out all four batters he faced to earn the save.
Dos Pueblos got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Heiduk and Travis Craven hit back-to-back singles to open the game and eventually scored. Consecutive hits by Peter Appel and John Wetzel led to a third run.
Montalvo tied the score in the bottom of the first on a three-run homer.
Wetzel, the Dos Pueblos catcher, led the defense. He threw out three runners attempting to steal and neutralized Montalvo’s running game.
