Series sweep so sweet for Gauchos

Sophomore pitcher Krista Cobb held off Long Beach State (21-25, 5-10 Big West) for 10 innings on Sunday afternoon to lead UCSB (13-33, 4-11 Big West) to a 1-0 victory over the 49ers and the Big West Conference series sweep.

Jamie Adishian scored the game-winning run at the bottom of the tenth inning on a sacrifice fly hit to center field by Jessica Beristianos. Adishian had opened the inning with a single hit past the Long Beach pitcher Brooke Turner, down the middle of the field and she moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Jessica Ziegler.

BOX SCORE

Brooke Putich hit a fielder’s choice to Turner, but Adishian beat out the throw to third base and both runners were safe on the play. Beristianos then ended the game with her sacrifice fly.

Both pitchers were phenomenal in the marathon pairing. Cobb (6-11) earned her third win of the weekend after limiting the 49ers to just six hits. She walked one and struck out two in the victory.

Turner (9-10) tossed the complete game for Long Beach and also allowed just six hits. She walked two and struck out 11.

Amanda Ziegler and Adishian led the Gauchos at the plate, each going 2-for-4.

The series win is the Gauchos’ first of the season and first over Long Beach State since 2001.

The Gauchos will return to Campus Diamond next weekend for their final home series of the season against Pacific. The three-game set will begin with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, May 8 and will conclude with a single game at noon on Sunday.
