SBCC’s Stephen Scrafford has been voted WSC Male Track Athlete of the Year by the conference coaches.
The freshman from Cooperstown, N.Y., won the 5,000 and 10,000 meter titles in the WSC Championships, then captured the Southern Cal title in the 5,000 at Saddleback College with a season-best time of 15:05.93. It was the seventh-fastest time in school history.
Last Saturday, he rallied to take second in the State 5,000 at Antelope Valley College, passing most of the field to finish in 15:58.72 on a windy day in Lancaster. He ended up 2.45 seconds behind the winner and earned All-American honors.
“Stephen competed especially well at the end of the season,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “This award is well deserved and I’m really happy to see the WSC coaches recognize his efforts and accomplishments.”
Scrafford plans to transfer to Northern Arizona and compete on the nation’s No. 2 cross country team in the fall.
