Jesse Ferris and Andy Clayton each shot 4-over 148 for 36 holes on Monday and SBCC finished sixth in the Community College State Golf Championships at Oak Valley GC in Beaumont. Ferris (73-75) and Clayton (75-73) tied for 10th in the 60-player field.
West Hills won the title with 745 strokes. Chabot was second at 751, followed by Cypress (754), Riverside (757), Orange Coast (759), SBCC (762), Fresno City (776) and American River (796). Connor Covington of Santiago Canyon and Sejun Yoon of Palomar were the medalists at 4-under 140 on a day that started out cold and wet and finished in windy conditions.
SBCC’s Albert Corral (80-73–153) tied for 24th, Cameron Tennant tied for 37th (75-81–156) and Ross Martin was 39th (79-78–157).
“We had a number of blowup holes and that took us out of contention,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “It was a tough day. But I’m proud of the guys. They worked hard all year and slowly but surely, we got where we wanted to be. We just couldn’t repeat the performance of last week.”
The Vaqueros, the No. 3 team from the WSC, won the Southern Cal Regional on May 10 with a 744.
