Rams swept away by Chadwick in first round

Joe Gottwald finished his stellar career with 14 digs, 13 kills, three aces and three blocks, but the Cate boys volleyball team was overwhelmed by visiting Chadwick in a 25-12, 25-21, 25-23 loss on Tuesday in the opening round of the CIF Division V playoffs.

“We kind of came in expecting a little bit of an easier matchup considering they were the third-place team out of their league, but the Prep League that they play in is strong,” said Cate coach Dan Terry. “They were pretty stacked with two really good outside hitters and a smooth, smart setter.”

Freshman Stu Engs added six kills and three blocks for the Rams (8-6), who were up 23-22 in the third set and had a swing to tie it up at 24-24 but couldn’t get it to fall.

“We were pretty out-gunned, but I think it was the best fight we’ve put up all year and I’m proud of the way we played,” said Terry.
