Cate’s boys tennis team scored an 11-7 victory over San Marcos on Friday, taking out the Royals for the second time this season.
Blake Mackall was in Cate’s singles lineup for the first time in a while and swept his three sets. Austin Lokre and Chris Lin added three win between the two of them as Cate took 6-of-the-9 singles sets.
The key to the match may have been the ability of Rohit Gotswamy and Mark Mullan to sweep their three sets against San Marcos’ strong doubles teams.
Nik Kilpelainen and Garrett Timmons managed to claim two-of-three doubles sets as the only winning Royals double team while Petar Jivkov did the same in singles.
“We had eight close sets and won four of them, so it could have gone either way,” said Rams head coach Bob Bonning.
It was the season finale for San Marcos while Cate, the No. 5 team in Division IV, will host their first-round playoff game on Wednesday.
