MALIBU – UCSB’s Mark Haddow hit a game-tying two-run home run in the fifth inning, but Pepperdine’s Miles Silverstein hit his first homer of the season to give the Waves a 5-4 victory over the Gauchos on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
UCSB scored a run in the eighth inning on Beck Wheeler’s sacrifice fly, but the Gauchos could get no closer in losing for the sixth time in its past seven games. UCSB falls to 20-23 on the season while Pepperdine improves to 18-24.
Nick Loredo (0-3) took the loss for the Gauchos as he allowed Silverstein’s blast in relief of starter Greg Davis.
Gunnar Terhune, Derek Eligio and Haddow each had two hits for the Gauchos while Ben Edelstein had UCSB’s only other hit. Edelstein is now 10 for his past 18 after compiling three three-hit games last weekend.
Davis allowed three runs in his three innings on four hits while striking out two. The Waves got all three runs against Davis in the third on back-to-back doubles – the second scoring two runs – and a wild pitch.
UCSB opened the scoring in the third when Terhune tripled to open the inning before Eligio’s ground out brought him in.
Haddow’s homer was his fifth of the season, which ties Marty Mullins for the most on the team. It was Haddow’s first long ball since March 28 against USF.
The Gauchos will travel to No. 27/30 UC Irvine for a three-game series this weekend. Friday’s game starts at 6 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday’s games are at 1 p.m.
