Mustangs mess with Gauchos’ title hopes

INDIAN WELLS  – The UCSB men’s tennis team had its streak of four consecutive league tournament championships ended on Saturday as the Gauchos dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Cal Poly at the Big West Tournament in Indian Wells.

UCSB finishes the regular season with a 14-11 overall record and, for the first time in a while, will not compete in the NCAA Tournament.

“The guys feel empty,” said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. “We came here thinking we could win and we didn’t. Our effort today was great, but it wasn’t enough. It’s a very empty feeling.”

Freshman Benjamin Recknagel and junior Alex Konigsfeldt were outstanding for the Gauchos. Each won their singles matches, and Recknagel win his doubles contest. Recknagel defeated the Mustangs’ Matt Fawcett at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and he was joined by fellow-freshman Lucas Sudow to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.

Konigsfeldt blanked Cal Poly’s Drew Jacobs at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.

The Gauchos other point came from a No. 1 doubles win by Mathieu Forget and Taylor Chavez Goggin. The duo defeated Mustangs Alexander Sonesson and Bridge by an 8-6 score.
