SBCC’s Nikolay Ivanov and Regis Fastrez rallied to win their opening match at the State Men’s Tennis Championships on Friday in Newport Beach before dropping their quarterfinal match.
Ivanov, a freshman from Bulgaria, and Fastrez, a first-year player from Belgium, were the No. 2 seed from the South in the 16-team draw. They beat Thomas Coibion-Andy Riggs 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 of American River and dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Aswin Kolady-Kirill Sinistyn of Fresno City, the third seed from the North, on Friday night.
“They played really well and set the bar pretty high for a freshman team,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “Making the top eight in the state is impressive.”
