Sophomores Matthew Grimes and Charlie Taylor brought the Frontier League boys tennis doubles title back for Bishop Diego on Tuesday, beating Villanova’s Tony Kuo/Evan Bernhoff 6-4, 6-2 in the league championships held at Santa Clara High.
Nolan Tisdale and Tim Illgen finished third in the league, while Nick Lensander represented the Cardinals in singles and ran into Villanova star Patrick Lenz in the first round. Although he was swept in two sets, Lensander kept fighting and took the final game of the second set to eight deuces.
Grimes and Taylor will be at Cate School on May 21st for CIF competition. The Cardinals find out who they will play in the first round of the team CIF competition over the weekend.
“Charlie and Matthew were really consistent today. They went down 4-3 in the first set but came back to win it. After that you could see the momentum had definitely switched,” said coach Ray “Slash” Vazquez.
