El Segundo’s Nootbaar neutralizes Warriors

Carpinteria’s baseball team took second to El Segundo on Friday, falling to the Eagles 8-0 in the first round of CIF.

El Segundo starting pitcher Nigel Nootbaar kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in his four innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out six and left the game with the game already 8-0.

“He’s real solid,” said Carpinteria head coach Pat Cooney, noting that the scouting reports had it right. “He looked pretty darn good.”

The Eagles’ Brice Savage and Justin McCullough stoked the offense with three hits each, including McCullough’s game-changing three-run homer in the second inning.

Eric Batty and Kyle Crawford finished up for El Segundo with three innings of no-hit ball.

Robert Thornton, Zach Boberg and Diego Carrillo recorded hits for Carpinteria. The Warriors came closest to scoring in the third inning, when Boberg was thrown out at the plate in a close play while trying to score from second base on Carrillo’s single.

The Warriors finish their season with a 14-10 record after placing third in the Tri-Valley League and winning a CIF game.

“The group has a lot to be proud of,” Cooney said.
