Edgington leads pack of All-WSC Vaqueros

SBCC left-hander Zach Edgington was named co-Pitcher of the Year in the WSC North on Sunday and 12 other Vaqueros made the North Division team.

Edgington, a sophomore from San Mateo who’s signed to play for UCSB, went 4-1 in conference play with a 2.17 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. He held opponents to a .204 batting average and struck out a school-record 21 on April 22 against Ventura. He also fanned 13 and 11 in two other games and finished second in the state in strikeouts with 101.

The Vaqueros (20-16, 10-10) tied Cuesta for third in the WSC North and narrowly missed qualifying for the 18-team Southern Cal Regional.

Conner Rehage made the first team at designated hitter after hitting .333 in WSC play with seven home runs and 26 RBI. Other first-teamers were left fielder Tommy White (.413 average, 2 HR, 14 RBI); infielder Abe Ruiz (.402, 7 HR, 25 RBI) and catcher Steven Keller (.375, 5 HR, 18 RBI).

Edgington, Rehage, White and Ruiz were unanimous selections. Ruiz has signed to play at Long Beach State next year.

Daniel Howell (.306, 6 HR, 18 RBI) was a second-team choice, along with outfielder Danny Cavaletto (.305, 16 runs); pitchers Greg Selarz (4-1, 3.28 ERA) and Joe McGrew (2-2, 4.69 ERA, only five walks in 40.1 innings) and relief pitcher Ryan Gardner (4.38 ERA, 16 K in 11 appearances, 12.1 innings).

Selarz won the Golden Glove for pitchers with no errors in WSC play.

Three Vaqueros made honorable mention — outfielder Chase Yost (.314), infielder Chris Lauritzen (.296) and reliever D.J. Gunderson (10 appearances, 4.58 ERA).

WSC North champion Oxnard got the Player of the Year (infielder Brian Willson) and the Coach of the Year (Jon Larson).
SBCC led the state with a school-record 56 homers on the year and had three players with 10 or more — Rehage (13), Ruiz (11) and Howell (10). Rehage’s 13 round-trippers were No. 2 in the state.

“We have a great foundation in place,” said coach Teddy Warrecker, whose team dropped its last two games to Cuesta, allowing the Cougars to secure one of the last playoff berths. “You don’t get a chance to do it over in sports.

“Yes, we got 13 players on all-conference but we didn’t make the playoffs and that’s our measuring stick.”
