Cougars claw Royals on Senior Day

Ventura wasn’t a nice guest on Tuesday, eliminating San Marcos’ softball team from playoff contention on the Royals’ Senior Day with a 4-2 Channel League victory.

The Royals, who have their final game of the season at Ventura on Thursday, have seven seniors on the team, all starters. Hannah Ball and Jocelyn Flattery are the only starters returning from a team that will lose Kelly McKay, Corinne Yingling, Becky Estrada, Natalie Williams, Jenise Fretz, Leanne Fretz and Chelsea Friedman.

Thursday’s game has been switched to a 4 p.m. start time.

Alexis Purifoy gave the Cougars an early 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-RBI double in the top half of the first inning. Friedman got half of it back for the Royals in the bottom half when she scored from third base on a delayed steal.

McKay, who had two hits, scored San Marcos’ second run in the bottom of the fourth but Ventura had taken a 4-1 lead by then. The Royals proceeded to load the bases in the same inning with one out yet couldn’t score again.

Courtnie Snyder struck out 11 for Ventura to record the victory. The Royals managed to get six hits off her, including a double by Ball.
