Cate wrapped up its regular season with a victory over Dunn last week and in the process earned the No. 3 seed in the CIF playoffs that begin Thursday.
The Rams open up against Peninsula at home at 5:30 p.m. If the Rams win, the second round would be on Saturday.
With two starting senior defenders already absent, the Rams lost their senior captain in the 10th minute and found themselves trailing Dunn 2-6 at halftime. To make things worse, junior midfielder Kate Groetizinger also had to leave the game at the beginning of the second half, resulting in the team playing with one member short. All of the misfortune ended up pushing Cate to play even harder and finish strong.
Lisa Huang managed to control the draw in the second half, giving Cate much needed possession. Anne Weis took control from there, scoring five-second half goals for a total of six and two assists in the game. Battling back from a five-goal deficit, Cate briefly took the lead near the end of the second half only to have Dunn tie it up.
While Dunn scored first in extra time, freshman Alexis Hill came back with all three of Cate’s overtime goals. Rounding out the score for Cate were Steph Ruys de Perez, Abby Killea, and Lanea Pearson with one goal each.
Goalkeeper, Alexx Temena had an impressive 18 saves for the day, leaving the final score at 14-12.
