Bishop Diego’s seniors went out on a high note on Thursday, as the Cardinal baseball team defeated Fillmore 8-4 to finish 4-8 in the power-packed Tri-Valley League — good enough for fourth place.
Senior Trent Speier led the way, going 3-for-4 including a two-run, two-out single in the sixth that drove in the final runs of the game. Senior catcher Joe Salda had a double, and classmate Ted Sleep drove in a run on a single that sparked a key rally. Henry Bongiovi also made several key plays in the outfield.
It was senior Ryan Landeros who got everything going for Bishop, hitting an RBI triple in the first that gave the Cards a 2-1 lead.
On the mound, Cody Yokubaitis pitched five innings of one-run baseball and Hank Vanderfin pitched a scoreless seventh.
“It was nice for the seniors and the team to end season on a positive note. All players on the roster made meaningful contributions – a great team win,” said Athletic Director Dan Peeters.
