With the top two WSC men’s golf teams already assured of a regional playoff berth, there was one spot remaining on Monday in the 36-hole WSC Championships and SBCC grabbed it.
Ventura took first in conference Meets No. 9 and 10 with a 757 at par-71 Spanish Hills GC in Camarillo. SBCC won its first title in No. 9 with 379 strokes and finished second for the day at 762. WSC champion Canyons was a surprising fifth at 778.
Jesse Ferris shot a pair of 73s and led the Vaqueros at 4-over 146. Mike Levine shot 74-77 for a 151 and he was closely followed by Albert Corral (78-74–152) and Ross Martin (74-79–153).
Ferris and Corral earned first-team All-WSC distinction based on their season averages. Paul Misko of Ventura was the WSC Player of the Year, finishing just two strokes ahead of Ferris.
“There was a lot of pressure today,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “Our single goal was to advance to the state playoffs and we did that. Jesse and Albert have led us all year and Ross and Mike are starting to play more solidly.”
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 5 in Southern Cal, beat Canyons for the first time this year. The Cougars went 4-8 on Monday and still won the WSC with a 50-10 record. Ventura was second at 46-14, followed by SBCC (38-22) and Bakersfield (35-25).
Canyons, Ventura and SBCC will represent the WSC in the Southern Cal Regional on May 10 at the SCGA Course in Murrieta. The top four teams will move on to the State Championships in Beaumont.
