SBCC playoff hopes up in smoke after loss

Pete Aronchick collected 17 kills on Wednesday night and Miles Evans had 16 but SBCC still came up short in a 3-1 WSC men’s volleyball loss at Santa Monica. The 28-30, 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 setback ended the Vaqueros’ hopes of making the playoffs.

Jonathan Newton had six blocks and Andrew Thomason and Aronchick had eight digs apiece for Santa Barbara (8-8, 3-6), which has dropped four of its last five matches. Kaahukane Leite-AhYo dished out 53 assists for the Vaqueros, who swept the Corsairs (5-9, 3-5) in the first meeting on March 17 in Santa Barbara.

“They played a lot better than they did the first time,” said coach Melody Parker. “They dug a lot of balls and just outplayed us tonight. Our passing broke down a little and we would have liked to set the middle a little more.”

SBCC will host second-place Moorpark in the season finale on Friday at 6 p.m.
