San Marcos web-gems not enough against Rio Mesa

San Marcos may have committed four errors and lost 7-0 to visiting Rio Mesa on Wednesday, but the Royals’ softball team also pulled off some of the best defensive plays that coach Alex Sheldon has seen in his six years with the team.

One was a first — the first 5-4-3 double play one of Sheldon’s teams have executed. Natalie Williams was the third-base catalyst on that play, and she also pulled off a 5-3 double-play and made a diving snag of a line drive. Freshman shortstop Hannah Ball, who had a double in the game, made a diving stop of a ground ball and made a highlight-reel put-out at first to save more runs from scoring for Rio Mesa.

San Marcos (6-11) plays at Carpinteria on Friday.
