San Marcos girls pick up Channel League win

The San Marcos girls swimming team picked up its second Channel League win in coach Brian Roth’s six years at the helm on Tuesday, downing host Buena 102-83.

Emily Wheeler picked up wins in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly while Brittny Hummel had personal bests in the 200 IM (second place) and 100 fly. The Royals went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly, with Emilia Wakamatsu sandwiched between Wheeler and Hummel in second place.

“Brittny swam only freestyle her freshman and sophomore years, so it’s a big deal that she sucked it up for the team and swam some events that aren’t as desirable,” said Roth, who added that it was Wheeler’s best performance of the year.

Alex Brown placed second in diving for San Marcos, which travels down to Mt. SAC for the Walnut Invitational this weekend.

Blair Rodriguez, who was recently honored as Special Olympian of the Month by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, swam her first away meet for the Royals and finished the 50 freestyle in 1:11.56 — a personal record by six seconds.

“It was great, because she really gets the team fired up and gets everyone into it,” said Roth.

On the boys side, San Marcos fell 130-42 but got a great performance from Chris Bebb, who took third in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 1:06.40. Also, Daniel Chan dropped his time in the 500 free by over 15 seconds, finishing in 6:22.98.
