Royals have the stars but not the depth to beat Cougars

San Marcos came home from Ventura High on Tuesday with some great individual wins, but the Cougars’ track team had the depth needed to win the Channel League matchup.

“They have so much depth that we couldn’t spread ourselves around well enough,” said coach Marilyn Hantgin” They were really strong, and a lot of our kids ran hard Saturday (at the County Championships) so we were pretty tired.”

Elysia Hodges won the girls 100 (12.72 seconds), 100 hurdles (16.29) and 300 hurdles (45.74). Hannah McDaniel won the 400 and high jump, and the Royals won the 4×400 relay.

In the boys side, the Royals went 1-2-3 in the 100 and ran their best 4×100 time of the year, clocking in at 43.72 seconds. Bennie Kirkwood won the high jump and took second in the shot put and 100 hurdles.

San Marcos now awaits the league finals, which will be held as a night meet next Friday at La Playa Stadium.
