San Marcos and Dos Pueblos look pretty smart right now, as CIF has recognized four athletic teams from each school as academic champions for the 2009-10 school year. Carpinteria was awarded one such distinction amongst smaller schools.
With four each, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos had more selections than any other large schools in the section. Arroyo Grande and Corona del Mar were next with two each. In the smaller school division, Webb had the most with seven CIF academic team champions.
San Marcos’ ultra-brainy teams are boys cross country, girls swimming, boys volleyball and wrestling. Dos Pueblos’ winners are girls cross country, girls soccer, softball and girls track & field. Carpinteria’s girls golf team represented the Warriors as the best students in CIF’s Southern Section.
The Royals and Chargers were stacked up against other student-athletes from schools with enrollments larger than 1500 students while Carpinteria was included with those under 1500.
The Warrior girls (3.915) barely edged the Dos Pueblos girls cross country team (3.905) for highest average GPA amongst the nine local CIF academic team champions.
