Reiken, Vazquez stepping down from Bishop hoops and volleyball

The following is a statement released from Bishop Diego Athletic Director Dan Peeters:

Joe Reiken, head coach of girls and boys volleyball, has recently been appointed as the Vice Principal and Dean of Studies of Bishop Diego beginning on July 1, 2010. Due to the new responsibilities of this appointment, Dr. Reiken has decided to step down as the head coach of the girls volleyball program. In his four years leading the program, Reiken’s teams advanced to the CIF playoffs twice, and won a Frontier League Championship in 2006.

Ray Vazquez has decided to step down from his position as the Head Coach of the Boys Basketball program.  Vazquez is vacating the position to allow him more time to spend with his family, and  focus on completing an advanced degree.  In his six years leading the program, Vazquez’s teams advanced to the playoffs five times, and won a Tri Valley League Championship in 2005.

I am grateful for the years of dedicated service that Coach Vazquez and Coach Reiken have given to the athletic department.  Both have been tremendous assets to their respective programs. Those interested in applying for either position should contact Dan Peeters at 967-1266 x113 for more information. Applications for both positions will be accepted during the month of April.

Coach Vazquez, thanks for all the hard work, dedication, and mentoring you have provided our kids. The leadership and life lessons you taught our kids is invaluable.
    Thank you

Coach Vazquez didn't resign he was forced out by Peters and some parents with a bunch of money! Nice Catholic School with morals, money over committment to the kids and the program!

  3. what a joke! says

Let's see how legitimate Peters is on his posting in the news press for a new coach. I hear the same parents that forced Vazquez out want Ben R. for their coach. Time will tell us if this is true Dan.

It's no secret what's going on at Bishop, coach Vazquez has been forced out by some money and some shady parents! It's a shame that the people he was supose to be able to trust are the same that undercut him. Coaching kids should be about teaching life skills while playing the game and that's what coach V is about. When is the last time Bishop has had a D1 player? Wake up Bishop!

vazquez sucked as a coach stop protecting him! his only good season was directly after coach ward left the program. the team was already in place he basically just had to show up. he didnt know how to be a leader as a coach and take control. if u EVER came to a bishop basketball game you could see that. there was no chemistry or team unity amongst the team. last time i checked coaches are supposed to be responsible for helping create that. the past couple of years he has had plenty of talent to make use of and he hasnt prospered once from it. the last straw i believe was when bishop lost to carp without one of carp's two headed dragon, Kevin Lusterio. that was just embarassing! i know vazquez is a great person and its about building character and making men, but being a varsity head coach and not producing like he could is disappointing and also part of the job is to win. no one likes to lose and its been shown that vazquez cant produce a winning team.

  6. BishopthePowerhouse says

When did Bishop become Mater Dei? I must of blinked when they had plenty of talent, when was that? Apparently character doesn't count at Bishop! Good luck with those CIF Championships, money can't buy those!

  7. fdlsakjnfasdlk says

well im not saying mater dei level. i know personally at ANY LEVEL people enjoy winning or at least a coach who is confident. coach vazquez has neither qualities in his coaching criteria. im not saying CIF Championships and what not its more about have the opportunity to reach that goal. vazquez couldnt even win a playoff game and besides he had to petition for a playoff berth because he couldnt coach them to even get a bid. it aint about money either its more about the emotional rollarcoaster the kids have to go through with vazquez as the head coach. because basically he tries to fulfill everyones wishes, which turns the basketball team into vazquez needs to make everyone including the kids parents happy. thus creating a boys and girls club team because now every parent gets to see there kid play but they also get to see there kid lose. it is unfair to the kids who work their butts off to become a good team and vazquez ruin the chemistry by making everyone happy. yes but that is totally about money huh? because obviously bishop doesnt care about the kids…yes your completely correct.

  8. Coach Vazquez was quite qualified. He is Bishop Alum who played division one basketball and is committed to winning. It may be time for a change, but taking shots at him is unwarranted. He is probably the last bishop player to succeed at the d-1 level. Many of the spineless parents who are lobbing grenades at him and Peeters have no idea what it takes to run a basketball program at at talent-poor school like Bishop. Get real.

just cuz he played d-1 basketball doesnt mean he can coach basketball. thats what seperates coaches and players. some people are gifted and have the ability to do both things tremondously, but most likely its either or. coaches and players see the game differently. a coach analyzes the game and comes up with strategies to help achieve success. while a player is a hard worker who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve success for his/her team. coach vazquez may be a tremendous basketball player, but he doesnt see the game like a coach should. i really wouldnt care if hes michael jordan. If michael jordan cant coach than he shouldnt coach plain and simple.

I am a former player of Coach V and to be honest he was the worst basketball coach i ever had. He didn't know what to do in difficult situations and he would try to be more of a friend than a coach. Also for all of you people protecting him you obviously have no idea what you are talking about because you have never been coached by him. He is a good person, but not a good coach.

  11. Bishop Alum says

I was coached by Coach Vazquez for four years. While he did have his downfalls or the best records, he was still one hell of a coach. Not only did he know basketball, he also made it a point to form the player as a whole person as well as a ball player. He gave a tremendous amount of time to that school and all of you people hurling insults are way out of line. Ya he might not have been the best coach bishop has seen, but he wouldnt hide behind anonymity talking crap. If you have played for him, you know what a great person and player he is. So coach V, if your are reading this, thanks for the countless hours in the brick house. You will be missed!
