Carpinteria’s Sue Beatty was the duathlon champion at Tuesday’s Reef & Run, the season-opener for the weekly ocean-swim-and-run event held at the Cabrillo Bath House throughout the summer.
The weather wasn’t very summer-like quite yet as the evening turned out to be grey and cool, but several dozen committed athletes braved the conditions, including 55-degree water temperatures, to compete in a variety of races.
Beatty completed the duathlon with a winning combined time of 41 minutes, three seconds. Beatty was a trend-setter as four of the top five finishers of the 1k swim/2 mile duathlon were female.
Goleta’s Jeff Mumm averaged 5:16 a mile to win the 4-mile run in 21:02 while Carpinteria’s Stewart Reid was tops in the 1-mile ocean swim, completing the circuit in 23:05.
Next week’s Reef & Run begins at 6:20 p.m. Santa Barbara’s other summertime swim-and-run series, Nite Moves, has its season opener on Wednesday, May 5.
