Perry, Dons within striking range at top-tier tournament

Jack Perry shot a pair of 71s on an exhausting 36-hole day on Friday and the Santa Barbara High golf team finished six shots behind first-place Servite with 18 holes to go at the Champions Invitational in Indio.

The tournament, played at the par-72 Golf Course at Terra Lago, features 20 elite teams from all over California and a couple of squads from other states. In the college format, the teams play 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday.

Perry’s 71-71 effort was backed up by rounds of 75-71 from Shane Lebow, 72-76 from Mickey Kirby and 75-79 from Ray Gerow. Sean Searls shot 82-79, but in college format only the top four scores are counted.

The Dons are in fourth place, three shots behind second-place Mira Costa and one shot behind La Quinta. On Saturday, the top four teams play together.

“We’re in the hunt and in that final four group, which was one of our goals,” said coach James Bedard. “The kids are exhausted, but they’re playing well.”
