Oxnard overcame a 9-3 deficit with eight runs in the sixth on Thursday at Pershing Park and went on to defeat SBCC 13-9 in a WSC Gold Division softball game.
The loss spoiled a spectacular offensive performance by Vaquero shortstop Laura Cannon, who had two homers, a three-run double and six RBIs in the first four innings. She finished 3-for-4.
“The pitches I hit (on the homers) were both inside and I just got around on them,” said Cannon, a freshman from Berkeley. “We just didn’t have it on defense today.”
Santa Barbara (18-12, 5-6) led 9-2 after Cannon opened the fourth inning with her second homer of the season. Kandace Amaro and Brystal Hood homered for the Condors (15-13, 6-6), who collected 16 hits off four Vaquero hurlers.
“Six RBIs — that was an outstanding effort by Laura,” said coach Paula Congleton. “For the defense and the rest of her teammates not to back that up … we got nine runs and that should have been ample to win the game. We mentally and physically fell apart on defense. I made a couple of defensive changes because I had to. Our pitchers were flat today.”
The Vaqueros commited seven errors and five of the eight runs in the sixth were unearned.
Lisa Zeitlin had two hits and scored two runs and Elicity Fabing went 2-4 with an RBI single in the third.
“We’ve got to brush this off,” said Congleton. “It’s game-to-game now. We want to play as hard as we can and be the spoilers in conference.”
The Vaqueros will host Moorpark in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
