Nguyen beats field by 14 seconds in 500 free

Dos Pueblos freshman Janelle Nguyen made a big splash at the Long Beach Wilson Invitational on Wednesday, dominating the field in the prelims of the 500 freestyle while also winning the 100 butterfly.

Nguyen finished the 500 free in 5:03.27 — almost 14 seconds better than the second-place finisher — for a personal best by 10 seconds.

“I expected her to be in the top three or four but definitely not to win. Her splits were so even in the 500. They were less than three-tenths off of each other for each 50-meters. That was pretty amazing,” said coach Leslie Wiggins-Roth.

The youngster then won the 100 fly with a mark of 58.58 seconds.

Emily Rose Williams was third in the 50 free at 25.09 seconds and took fifth in the 100 freestyle at 55.0 seconds. She was also a member of the Chargers’ fourth-place squad in the 200 free relay along with Michelle Dockendorf, Emily Foster and Tahnia Mark.

Dockendorf was second in the 200 IM at 2:12.73 and won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.22. Cruickshank took third in the 100 breast at 1:11.06.

Freshman Paige Pighetti swam well enough to earn the second alternate spot in the 200 free and 100 backstroke heading into Friday’s finals. Foster in the first alternate in the 200 IM and Mark is the first alternate in the 100 free.
