New combos tested in Bishop’s easy win

Coach Ray “Slash” Vazquez is trying to figure out how his Bishop Diego boys tennis team can beat first-place Villanova, so he played mad scientist on Tuesday and tried out some new formulas in a 16-2 Frontier League win over visiting St. Bonaventure.

Matthew Grimes and Charlie Taylor played doubles together and went 3-0, and the Cardinals (4-1 in league play) went undefeated in singles. Things won’t be so easy in Thursday’s home match against the Wildcats.

“Their singles are very, very good and we can’t beat their No. 1 or No. 2, so I’m hoping we can get two wins off of their No. 3 player and then win the match in doubles,” said Vazquez, who said he thinks Grimes and Taylor likely make up the top doubles tandem in the league.

The potion will be put to the ultimate test at 3 p.m. Thursday.
