Martinez moves SBCC past Moorpark

Paty Martinez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs on Tuesday, helping SBCC down Moorpark 10-2 and earn a split of a WSC Gold Division softball doubleheader at Pershing Park. Santa Barbara scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to win it on the eight-run rule.

The Vaqueros (18-13, 6-7) dropped the opener 8-7 on a solo homer by Moorpark catcher Taylor Neumann in the top of the seventh. SBCC rallied from a 5-1 deficit and tied it at 7 in the sixth on a two-run single from Laura Cannon and Janelle Wong’s bloop single to right that scored Cannon. The Vaqueros commited four errors in the first three innings, leading to five unearned runs.

“The errors are starting to creep up on us and it’s a lack of mental concentration,” said SBCC coach Paula Congleton. “We’ve got to be aggressive and charge the ball.”

Amanda Sharp went 4-for-4 in the nightcap and scored two runs while Elicity Fabing and Lindsie Holloway each had two hits in the first game.

Martinez, a freshman second baseman from Lompoc High, went 4-for-7 on the day with her first homer, a double and six RBIs. Her two-run single in the fifth inning of the second game stretched the lead to 7-2.

“I made an error in the first inning of the first game and coach got on me,” noted Martinez, who hit a solo home run in the second inning of the nightcap. “My bat hasn’t been too good lately, so I figured I needed to step it up.”

Kailey Snyder, who tossed a six-hitter in Game 2, had a run-scoring single in the sixth. Fabing and Nicole Adair followed with RBI singles to end the game for the Vaqueros, who are 12-3 at home. Jamie Yeller spoiled Snyder’s shutout bid with a two-run homer in the sixth for Moorpark (17-16, 8-4).

“We had 16 hits and scored 10 runs in the second game after having five errors in the first one,” said Congleton. “That’s been the inconsistency of our season. We’re consistently inconsistent.”

The Vaqueros travel to East L.A. for a doubleheader on Saturday against East L.A. at noon and L.A. Valley at 2 p.m.
