Martin brings Vaqueros into contention

Ross Martin fired a 1-over-par 72 to share medalist honors on Monday at Oakmont CC, leading SBCC to a second-place finish at WSC No. 7 in Glendale.

Martin, a freshman from Newport, Ore., was the co-medalist with Alex Macaluso of Canyons. On a day when the Vaqueros’ top two golfers struggled, Martin, Mike Levine (77) and Cameron Tennant (78) came up big.

Canyons took first at 376, nine strokes ahead of Santa Barbara. Ventura and Bakersfield tied for third at 396 with Ventura taking third on the strength of its sixth-man score. SBCC moved into third place in the WSC for the first time this year with a 25-17 record, one game ahead of Bakersfield.

Canyons leads the pack at 40-2, followed by Ventura at 32-10.

“It got windy for the second nine (holes) and it was a very tough course,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “The course beat up a lot of teams today.

“I was real happy with our scores. Jesse (Ferris) and Albert (Corral) have been carrying us all year and it was nice to see Ross, Mike and Cameron come through.”

The Vaqueros will compete in WSC No. 8 on Wednesday at Marshall Canyon in La Verne.
