Four Mustang runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth proved to be too much as Westmont Baseball (11-23, 6-16 GSAC) fell to Golden State Athletic Conference opponent The Master’s (15-19, 8-14) by a score of 11-5 on Thursday afternoon at Russ Carr Field.
Designated Tim Leary hit a monster two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Westmont a 5-4 lead. Leary’s blast cleared not only the centerfield fence, but also the 35-foot high batters eye.
But the Warriors did not hold onto the lead long. The Mustangs used eight hits and five walks to take control of the game over the last two innings.
Dan Price was assigned the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in one and one-third inning of relief. Starter Geoff Rocha had a strong outing and kept the Warriors in the game. He pitched six inning and gave up four runs on 11 hits.
Daniel Sheaffer received the win after pitching two and two-third innings and allowing just one hit. Mustang starter Tyler Bersano pitched six and one-third innings allowing five runs on nine hits.
The Mustangs and Warriors will continue their four-game series on Saturday when Westmont travels to Santa Clarita for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
