Handful of Vaqs stay alive at Individuals

Five SBCC players moved into the Round of 16 on Friday in the WSC Individual Women’s Tennis Championships at Ventura College.

Amy Sagraves, the third seed, rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Alix Thomas of Santa Monica. Other second-round winners for the Vaqueros were No. 8 seed Meghan Schaefer, Terea Tapu, Kendra Ross and Meike van Hoogenhuijze. Those five need one win on Saturday to advance to the Southern Cal Regional at Cerritos College.

In doubles, Ross and Van Hoogenhuijze, playing together for the first time, won a second-round match 6-0, 6-4. Sagraves-Schaefer, the fifth seed, and No. 8 Tapu-Anna Slyutova received byes into Saturday’s Round of 16.

“The girls played great,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “We won almost every match today (8 of 9) and it doesn’t get any better than that.”
