UCSB dropped just one set on Friday as it swept past the University of Portland in women’s tennis action, 7-0.
The Gauchos jumped out to a quick start, earning the doubles point when the Pilots defaulted at No. 3 and then Tova Hausman and Bryanna Ojeda topped Megan Sporndli and Lacey Pflibsen at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. UCSB also won at No. 2 doubles where Jordan Dockendorf and Natalia Lozano defeated Valeska Hoath and Stefanie Doolittle, 8-6.
Sofia Novak won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, beating Pflibsen by a 6-3-6-2 count. Hausman, Jill Damion, Annabel Gledden, and Ojeda swept their matches at Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6 respectively. At No. 2 singles, Lozano posted an easy 6-0 win in the first set and then built a 4-1 advantage in the second before Sporndli rallied to win the set, 4-6. Lozano, however, bounced back to earn a 7-5 victory in the final set giving the Gauchos a sweep.
The victory improves UCSB’s overall record to 11-10. Portland drops to 5-10.
UCSB’s final regular season match is scheduled for Sunday, April 18, at 11:00 am on the Robertson Gym Courts. It is a significant one on two fronts. It is the Gauchos Senior day. Bryanna Ojeda, Tova Hausman, and Asagi Onaga will be taking the court for as Gauchos for the last time in a home match. All three seniors will play both singles and doubles on Sunday.
“I hope we can get a nice crowd to help us recognize our three seniors on Sunday,” said head coachPete Kirkwood. “It would also help us to finish off the regular season with as much momentum as possible.”
Finally,UCSB can clinch a No. 2 seed in the Big West Tournament with a win over UC Riverside and a UC Irvine win at Pacific on Saturday. The scenario is very realistic. The Gauchos need to finish in a three way tie for second-place to be the No. 2 seed. The lowest possible seed is No. 3.
