Colegrove, Proctor hold it down for Royals

Saturday’s third-place game at the Cherry Hill Classic was the sixth game in four days for San Marcos. Because of the busy schedule, San Marcos head coach Rob Crawford turned to his younger arms in its final game in Arizona.

Zach Colegrove and Will Proctor combined to hold off Tuscon as the Royals won 4-3 by scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind for the victory.

Shane Moore came through with the two-RBI single that scored Jeff Sorenson and David Kim. Proctor pitched the last three innings to pick up the win after a strong first four from Colegrove

Nick Stathopoulos continued his torrid hitting, adding three more hits against Tuscon to finish the tournament with an average near .700.

The Royals finish play in Arizona with a 4-2 record. Two of those wins came against schools on Maxpreps’ top-100 teams in the country. San Marcos improved on its sixth-place result from the year before.

“We’re real happy with that,” said Royals head coach Rob Crawford.

Other highlights from the week include Riley Moore’s clutch power performance in the home run derby. Moore hit four straight on his final out to total seven home runs and claimed the trophy.
