Chargers take down Dons at Elings

Dos Pueblos dominated Santa Barbara High on Friday at Elings Aquatic Center on an afternoon that didn’t feature too many lightning-fast times. DP won the boys competition 118-68 while the Charger girls won 117-68.

Michelle Dockendorf had a pair of wins for the Chargers girls, beating the field in the 100 butterfly with a CIF consideration time of 1:01.19 . She also dominated the 100 breastroke with a mark of 1:07.77, a 5-second margin of victory. Freshman sensation Janelle Nguyen won the 200 IM by a whopping 12 seconds and Emily Rose Williams won the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

Jamie Neushul, top, comes up for air during her duel with Camille Wissman in the 500 freestyle.

COMPLETE RESULTS

One of the most exciting showdowns on the girls side was in the 500 freestyle, as DP freshman Jamie Neushul edged Santa Barbara’s Camille Wissman by less than a second. The two were dead even for the entire five and a half minutes.

“I had no idea it was going to come down to the two of us. I would glance over and see her and it made me go faster,” said Neushul.

Santa Barbara won the girls 200 freestyle relay. Team members were Kelsey O’Brien, Maddie Trabucco, Amanda Wilson and Samantha King. Montana Marshall won the diving competition for the Dons.

On the boys side, Arizona State-bound Karl Boscacci won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. DP’s Josh Pighetti won the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, while Chase Racich won the 100 varsity. The Chargers have been going through their most intense training of the year, and Racich said he could definitely feel it.

“I felt like I was dragging a piano behind me,” he joked. “We’re all pretty sore.”

Coach Chris Parrish said that Sjors Van Alphen’s win in the 500 freestyle was one of the highlights of the day. Van Alphen was two body-lengths behind Santa Barbara’s Mark Davis — whom he had never beaten — but surged to win by over two seconds.

Parrish said that the times were a bit slower on Friday due to the intense recent training, while Dons head coach Mark Walsh said that he expected it since it was the first competition since spring break. Both teams swim at Mater Dei on Tuesday.
