Dos Pueblos’ boys tennis team counterbalanced a strong Cate doubles lineup with an even stronger singles side, resulting in a 12-6 non-league victory for the Chargers.
Dos Pueblos, ranked No. 8 in Division I, needed to win 8-of-9 singles sets to stave off the Rams, a top-ten team in Div. IV. The match was tied 3-3 after the first round and was 7-5 after second but Dos Pueblos went 5-1 in the final round to clinch the victory.
Sasha Gryaznov swept his three sets for the Chargers and dropped just one game in the process. Austin Cano also won three sets eith relative ease, dropping six games in three sets.
Cate’s top doubles teams of Rohit Gotswamy-Mark Mullan and Blake Mackall-Gregory Mak each won two sets while Ahmed Bou-Rabee and Jason Park captured one more. Cam Seo took the Rams’ one set in singles.
It was the second meeting of the year between Dos Pueblos and Cate, with the Chargers defeating the Rams 10-2 in a rain-shortened match played in early March. Wednesday’s result snaps a five-match winning streak for Cate (5-4) while DP improves to 9-4 overall.
