The Warriors hosted Cate and Santa Paula at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, pulling out team victories in both the boys and girls competition.
Shelby Dunlap was a four-time winner for Carpinteria. The junior recorded personal-best times in both the 100-meter sprint and 100-meter hurdles while also taking first in the girls high jump. Dunlap’s other triumph came in the 4×400 relay.
Cody Labrum was a double-winner for the boys. The first-year senior brought the Warriors some critical points with victories in the long jump and triple jump.
“He’s been a nice surprise for us,” Warriors head coach Van Latham said of Labrum.
Travis Doop continued Carpinteria’s dominance of the leaping events, besting his old PR in the pole vault by a foot to jump 11 feet, six inches.
Cate had a strong showing in the boys short-distance running events, with freshman Ema Boateng holding off Carpinteria’s Aron Uribe in both the 100 and 200-meter races. Cate sophomore Avery Schwartz took the 400-meters while senior Spencer McAvoy swept the 800- and 1600-meter events.
Cate lost a lot of ground in the field events, however, unable to place many athletes on the podium in the throwing and jumping contests.
Both schools will be competing at next Saturday’s 91st Russell Cup. The Warriors have a Tri-Valley League meet next Thursday first while Cate has a Condor League meet on Wednesday.
