Bennie Kirkwood had a hat-trick of personal records on Thursday. The San Marcos senior track standout won the high jump by clearing 6-6, won the shot put by throwing 43-7.5, and then won the 110 hurdles in 16 seconds flat.
It was all part of the Royals easily overpowering Santa Barbara in their dual meet at Valley Stadium — the San Marcos boys won 103-22 and the girls won 120-2.
“Bennie is really kind of an x-factor for us… I think he just felt good and it was just one of those exceptional days for him,” said coach Marilyn Hantgin.
Santa Barbara's Briggs Deardorff was dominant in the distance events.
Kirkwood’s winning mark in the shot put was just 6.5 inches ahead of Dons decathlete Tyler Parent, who won the discus throw by nearly 30 feet with a throw of 144-7. Shane Rowan won the triple jump for San Marcos with a personal-best mark of 44-8.5. He also took the long jump by leaping 21-5.5.
Parent was third in the 100-meter dash behind winner Randee Harvey and second-place Justin Duran of San Marcos. Harvey crossed the line in 11.38 seconds. Duran finished just ahead of him in the 200.
Briggs Deardorff picked up wins for Santa Barbara in the distance events, as expected. His two-mile time of 10:20.30 won by 1:21, and his mile time of 4:28 was nine seconds better than San Marcos’ Evan Bradford.
Junior Elysia Hodges won the girls 100 and 300 hurdles, also running on the winning 4×100 relay team. She hadn’t run the hurdles since her freshman year. Hannah McDaniel cleared 5-4 to win the high jump and also took first in the 400. Kelsey Hyatt won the discus and shot put for the Royals, and sisters Christine and Alexis Sienicki finished first and second, respectively, in the long jump.
Next up is the prestigious Arcadia Invitational over the weekend. Among those competing there will be Parent for the Dons and McDaniel, Rowan and two relay teams for the Royals.
