Janelle Wong went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs on Sunday as SBCC downed Bakersfield 6-2 to earn a softball split on the final day of the Bakersfield Classic. In the first game, the Vaqueros missed a chance to beat Riverside in the bottom of the seventh and lost 8-2 in eight innings.
Wong, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, hit her first home run of the season in the nightcap, a two-run shot to center in the seventh inning. Laura Cannon went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Lisa Zeitlin was 2-4. Joan Cannon stole four bases on the day for the Vaqueros (12-8).
Sara Gazzaniga (1-1) tossed a six-hitter with six strikeouts and got nine outs on pop-ups.
In the first game, the Vaqueros tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the seventh. Joan Cannon and Amanda Sharp opened with singles and both scored on a double by Lindsie Holloway. Holloway moved to third on a wild pitch and might have scored on Zeitlin’s fly ball to right but she left third base on contact and was doubled up after the catch.
“It was heartbreaking, Lindsie just lost her mind for a moment,” said coach Paula Congleton. “She had a great day, knocking in both our runs and hitting the ball hard several times.”
Joan Cannon had two of the Vaqueros’ eight hits.
SBCC will host Hancock in a WSC doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
