Westmont swept despite out-hitting San Diego

Despite outhitting the Hawks of San Diego Christian (4-18, 4-14 GSAC), Westmont Baseball (8-18, 4-12 GSAC) was swept in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader played at Stars Field in Lakeside on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took the first game 11-6 and then edged out the Warriors 4-3 in second game. Altogether, the Warriors stranded 21 men on the base pads.

Starter Gregg Pellici took the loss for the Warriors in the first game after giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings. The lefthander struck out three and allowed just one walk.

Mark Magdaleno posted four hits for the Warriors in five at bats. Jordan Bottenfield was three for five at the plate while Terrell Wong went two for four with two RBIs and a run scored.  Westmont tallied 15 hits and left 12 men on the base pads. The Warriors left men on base in every inning but the ninth and in scoring position in every inning except the second and ninth.

In the second game, Bottenfield went three for five at the plate and scored a run. Tim Leary recorded his tenth home run of the season on a two-run shot over the left-centerfield fence in the seventh inning. Leary becomes the first Warrior since Dominick Poluso in 2006 to recorded double-digit dingers and is on pace break Poluso’s single-season record of 14 set in 2004.

Jacob Regalado was assigned the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. Regalado struck out five and walked one. Dan Price finished up on the mound for Westmont, holding the Hawks scoreless and allowing just one hit in two innings. Price struck out two and did not allow a base on balls.

Westmont and San Diego Christian will lock horns again on Saturday when the Hawks travel to Russ Carr Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon
