For the second time this season, #8 Westmont Men’s Tennis has defeated #11 Point Loma Nazarene, defeating the Sea Lions 6-3 at the Plaza Racquet Club in Palm Springs. The Warriors took five of six singles matches to lock up the victory before the doubles matches were played.
“That was a relaxing way to go into doubles,” said Westmont Head Coach Mark Basham. “The guys really stepped up in singles and demonstrated that they were the better team.”
Playing at number three singles, Bryan Cox earned the first victory of the Warriors, winning 6-3, 6-2 against Tyler Bowman. Mattias Neuman made short work of his match on the number five court, defeating Travis Albaugh 6-2, 6-1.
“It was great to see Mattias do his job and win decisively,” said Basham.
The Warriors went up 3-0 when Arthur Kalayjian earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Landon Hilker at number six singles.
“Arthur had a sore back going into the match but that may have helped him to be focused and play within himself,” said Basham.
Point Loma grabbed their only singles point at the number four court where David Jaehnig defeated Diego Almeida 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The number one and two courts saw the Warriors lose the first set but come back and win the next two sets on both courts to take a 5-1 lead. At number one, Carlos Lima defeated Joel Myers 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 while at number two Tiago Hayashi won 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) over Curt Wheeler.
The Warriors picked up their final point at number one doubles where Lima and Cox defeated Wheeler and Hilker 8-6.
On the number two’s doubles court, Bowman and Myers defeated Almeida and Neuman 8-4 while at number three, Jaehnig and Albaugh defeated Hayashi and Kalayjian 8-6.
The Warriors will next take the court on Friday, March 25 when they travel to Cal State Fullerton to take on Hope International in a two o’clock match.
