Warriors survive rain delays, split with Pirates

Carpinteria and Santa Ynez got all 14 innings of their doubleheader in despite two rain delays on Saturday, and the Warriors won the first contest 8-3 before falling in the second, 8-1.

“It was a great first day, and we were excited just to be able to play. Some of the Web sites I checked said 100-percent chance of rain,” said coach Pat Cooney.

Carpinteria pitcher Colton Rubio

Sophomore Colton Rubio went the distance for the win in the first game, giving up seven hits while striking out a pair and walking four. Diego Carrillo went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Tom Arellano, Robert Thornton and Zach Boberg each tallied a pair of base-knocks.

The Pirates scored six runs over the final three innings in the second game.

“Ben Dickey was good on the mound for them, and we didn’t take advantage of early opportunities,” said Cooney.

Jose Carrillo had two hits for the Warriors (1-1) in the game. Carpinteria takes on Villanova on Tuesday.
