Vaqueros barely edged in first loss

SBCC won the last three singles on Tuesday to pull even at 3-3 but Santa Monica took two of three doubles sets to hand the visiting Vaqueros their first women’s tennis loss of the year, 5-4. Santa Barbara is 6-1 overall and 4-1 after one round of WSC play.

“It was a great match,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Meghan (Schaeffer) did a great job of rallying to win at No. 6 (6-4, 2-6, 7-5). The doubles were all really close and No. 1 could have gone either way.”

Lindsay Penner and Kendra Ross were edged at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker).

SBCC travels to Glendale on Tuesday.
