UCSB netters get back on track at home

The UCSB women’s tennis team rebounded from Friday’s road loss to beat the University of the Pacific Tigers at home on Saturday, 4-3. The win improves the Gaucho’s record to 5-8 overall, and 2-1 in Big West play.
The win was big for the Gauchos, who have aspirations of winning the conference.

“It keeps us in the hunt for the No. 1 seed at the Big West tournament later this year,” said head coach Pete Kirkwood.

Returning to No. 1 singles, Sofia Novak was beaten by Pacific’s Jennifer Widjaja (6-2, 6-1). Natalia Lozano, playing from the No. 2 slot, was defeated by Christina Goehl in straight sets (7-5, 6-3).

Jordan Dockendorf, returning to her winning ways, edged Julia Hansen (6-2, 2-6, 6-2) at the No. 3 position. At the No. 4 spot, freshman Annabel Gledden topped Olga Gumenyuk (6-1, 7-5). Tova Hausman, again showing her dominance at the No. 5 position, shut down Sarah Irvin (6-0, 6-3). Bryanna Ojeda still has not lost a dual match this season, after beating Sasha Fisher in No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-2).

In doubles play, the Tigers took the doubles point by winning the Nos. 1 and 3 matches. The only Gaucho win came at the No. 2 spot, where Hausman and Jill Damion moved up from the No. 3 position to soundly beat Hansen and Irvin (8-1).

The Gauchos will return to the court on Wednesday, March 10th at 1:30 p.m. when they host Hawai’i, before traveling to Irvine to battle the Anteaters on Friday, March 12th.
