Speier comes through once again for Chargers

Freshman Gabe Speier improved to 2-0 on the mound in Dos Pueblos’ final tune-up before league play, as the Chargers beat visiting Paso Robles 14-4 on Tuesday.

Speier pitched five innings, giving up three hits, three walks and no runs while striking out eight. Paso Robles had runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings but the youngster got out unscathed.

“He showed amazing composure. We went out to talk to him a couple of times and he wasn’t flustered at all. He was more concerned with the umpire not giving him calls,” said coach Nate Mendoza.

The Bearcats (2-2) were scoreless until the seventh inning.

Mendoza praised Jesus Salas for calling another solid game behind the plate. The Chargers (3-2) racked up 14 hits offensively, including a 3-run homer by Matt McClenathen and a solo shot from Michael Spiritosanto.

Steven Reveles went 3-for-4 including a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Josh Paden was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Joe Huthsing was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

The Chargers host Ventura on Friday.

“League is certainly gonna be interesting this year, and I think it’ll come down to the final game again,” said Mendoza.
