Smyth, Dons plunder Pirates in four sets

Senior Alec Smyth racked up 19 kills on Friday as the Santa Barbara boys volleyball team took care of visiting Santa Ynez in four sets, 25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 25-7.

“He’s improved quite a bit, to say the least,” said coach Chad Arneson of Smyth.

Clifford Anderson added 11 kills and eight blocks while sophomore libero Nick Clark had 12 digs. Fellow sophomore Holden Ploch added 10 kills and four blocks.

“I think we need to work on focusing throughout the whole match. I think we might have lost the fourth game because our kids were wanting to get out to Harder Stadium and support the Dons in the big soccer match,” said Arneson. “There’s definitely room for improvement, but this is a good group and these kids are hungry.”

The Dons (2-0) will face an old nemesis in Valencia on the road on Wednesday.
