SBCC’s Erika Schaeffer made a smashing debut in the 3000m steeplechase on Saturday at the Cal State Northridge Invitational, posting the third-fastest time in school history. She took fourth with her 11:55.89 clocking, which is also third-best in the WSC this year and earned her automatic qualification for the Southern Cal Championships.
“Erika did a great job in her debut steeplechase,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “She ran a smart race and built her confidence as she went along. Every water jump got better than the one before it. She has a bright future in the event.”
Samantha Dougherty was third in the 5000m in 19:29.54, one second off SBCC’s top-10 list. Aeryus Holloway took second in the B Section of the men’s triple jump (13.84m) and moved into 10th place on the school’s all-time chart.
Casey Russell posted a pair of personal bests in the shot put (10.73m) and discus (35.47m) as did Catalina Cisneros (shot 7.69m; discus 27.35m).
“The athletes really rose the occasion today against some very strong competition,” added Fickerson. “I’m real proud of how we competed.”
