SBCC swings gutsy rally to beat Pirates

Amy Sagraves rallied for a dramatic three-set women’s tennis victory on Tuesday and Meike van Hoogenhuijze pulled out a win at No. 6 singles as SBCC rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Ventura 5-4 on the road.

Anna Slyutova earned the other singles wins and teamed with Terea Tapu for an 8-0 doubles set win. Lindsay Penner and Kendra Ross secured the other doubles point for the Vaqueros (9-1, 7-1), who stayed in second place in the WSC.

Sagraves won for the fifth time in six matches, thanks to a 7-3 tiebreaker win in the third set.

“Amy played out of her mind, especially in the third set,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “It was a real battle. It was the last singles and if we’d lost, we would have been down 4-2 going into doubles instead of tied 3-3.

“And we’ve got to give credit to Meike. She fought really hard for an important win.”

SBCC hosts Hancock on Thursday at 2 p.m.
