Royals pull out the stops vs SLO

San Marcos’ boys tennis team overcame San Luis Obispo’s top singles players on Friday, claiming just enough sets to earn a 10-8 non-league victory over the Tigers.

James Campbell and Coco Angulo swept their three sets for SLO but San Marcos took the other three added to the seven sets the Royals won in doubles.

The duo of Nik Kilpelainen and Garrett Timmons swept 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), and 6-1, improving to 22-2 on the season.

“Nik and Garrett have been our most consistent doubles team so far. They serve well, return with aggression and close off the net,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “Nik had two straight second serve aces in the second round, had five aces on the day and Garrett was an animal at the net.”

San Marcos (7-1) plays its next match on Thursday in a critical Channel League contest with Dos Pueblos.
