Royals can’t overcome early slip-up at Ventura

San Marcos allowed six runs over its first two innings of Channel League play but settled down after that. Unfortunately, the hole was too big to climb out of as the Royals fell at Ventura, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

Jenise Fretz had her first game without multiple hits, but her one knock was a solo homer in the third inning. She also saved a home run with a great catch in left field. Freshman Hannah Ball had a double and a triple in the game, and Natalie Williams added a pair of hits.

“We just dug ourselves a hole in first two innings, but I thought girls responded with big hits and I thought we played a full seven innings,” said coach Alex Sheldon.

The Royals (3-2, 0-1) play Santa Ynez on Wednesday. Ventura is now 2-1, 1-0.
